During the DNC convention the anti-war protesters held daily demonstrations to express their views. The media was happy to report that these demonstrations were mostly peaceful and an exciting illustration of how our Freedom of Speech can work. I would not vouch for the accuracy of their message. I wasn't there.
In contrast, let's take a look at what the media is reporting concerning the anti-war protests at the RNC convention this week. There have been over 100 arrests by day two. There have been documented accounts of numerous assaults on delegates by angry protesters. In response to the assaults, the police have repeatedly doused the protesters with pepper spray, fired rubber bullets, closed streets, and performed raids where bomb-making materials, weapons, and maps were confiscated.
Let's not forget that these demonstrations are about "Peace". You got that?
In the interest of full disclosure I should say that I am not a Democrat, nor do I consider myself a Republican. I am a Christian, and my entire "worldview" is built upon what is recorded in the Bible. I am not even trying to be perfect, and I am trying very hard NOT to be judgemental...but I am learning that as soon as one person draws a line in the sand, many people on the opposite side of the line perceive that action as a direct attack on their personal freedoms.
Why? Because every opinion and decision is the result of a value judgement.
If I choose red socks over blue socks, I am making a personal statement concerning the value of red versus blue socks...as I see it. Does that silly example represent a moral issue? Um, no.
MOST decisions don't involve deep moral issues, but that doesn't keep a LOT of people from making connections that do not exist.
Watching the political coverage over the last 22 months, I am having a very difficult time believing those "Left" leaning protesters, and the seemingly complicit major media outlets have a firm grasp on what constitutes a "moral" issue. "Value" and "moral" are not synonyms.
Is waging war ALWAYS wrong?
Is selling a hamburger containing trans-fats morally wrong? What if you sell it in California?
Does anyone else find it ironic that the anti-war protesters at the RNC convention are using VIOLENCE (and many other violations of civil laws) to demonstrate their belief that war is MORALLY wrong? Apparently it is acceptable for them to break the law in order to express their opinions and beliefs.
Would they allow the same "freedom" to those who disagree with them?
I propose that the liberal worldview is like a ship without a rudder. Left-thinking activists have no other mechanism to determine their values outside of majority opinion. They are currently following the winds of change...but what could that change look like? Change could be Better and it could also be Worse. Their capacity for FAITH astounds me!
Here I thought scientists and liberals considered "faith" a sign of weakness or lack of mental acuity.
Thankfully, the most radical liberals do not represent a majority in this country, yet.
However, the political platforms of both political parties are trending toward secular humanism, a fact that follows the global culture. If this continues (and I see no reason for it not to) I expect my boys will live their adult lives in a world where some Christians are publicly ridiculed for supporting the positions the Bible has held for over 3,000 years.
Every new day I find that my worldview is increasingly offensive to our larger culture. This culture chooses not to acknowledge that God exists, or that the universe is established upon both physical and spiritual laws, and that an account must be given for how we choose to live out our lives. The faces and names change, but this failed strategy of individual sovereignty has been tried umpteen different ways in World history. It doesn't work. It CAN'T work.
Interestingly, the fundamental doctrine of the Christian worldview is absolutely static. Changes in what some churches teach do not occur because the Bible has changed...it is because those claiming to follow Christ have decided to change it for the sake of expediency.
To date, I have yet to learn of a change in Biblical teaching that brings anything but confusion, and eventually...apostasy.
I am personally convinced by the evidence, that the Bible is proof of God's existence. Yes, it has been misquoted, mistreated, and grossly misunderstood...but when it is allowed to "speak" for itself...no flaw can be found.
When read simply, literally, and without false pretense, the Bible describes an account of mankind's history and our rocky relationship with the Creator, that gets confirmed on all fronts and has stood up to withering scrutiny for two millenia.
I spend a great deal of my time listening and considering the opposing viewpoints. I challenge all of my critics to do the same. I promise it won't hurt you.
In the meantime, I watch the whole world wrestle with choices that seem to be killing us.
Who gets to decide what happens next?
I know the answer.
